This unit compares and contrasts Imperial Japan’s actions in Korea and Manchuria/China, especially during 1905-1945. Students will explore Japan’s key motivators and trace the expansion of Japanese influence and reaction to Japanese infiltration in Korea and Manchuria.

Unit 3: Exploring the Indonesian Mass Killings via Documentary
This module focuses on samples of documentary film and the subsequent narratives and testimonies from those impacted by the Indonesian Mass Killings of 1965-66. Students will examine the way in which the genre of documentary shapes the narrative process and problematizes the transmission/representation of the experiences and suffering of those affected by the killings.

This module addresses the challenges facing the Buddhist community in contemporary Thailand. Students will learn about the history of Buddhism in Thailand, challenges facing Buddhism in modern Thailand, and proposed reforms to address the challenges. Students will identify ways in which consumerism poses a threat to religion.
